A substack about gambling in the US? Sure, why not?
What you're going to read here: a lot of opinion and probably some snark.
I’ve been writing for a long time. I’ve been writing about gambling for not as long, but still a long time.
But in recent years, I haven’t had time or energy to write because of my full-time job. Now I am here to change that.
Why do you want to read what I have to say? Well, maybe you don’t, and maybe this is a cathartic experience that benefits only me. But if you do, I hope you’ll find something you like.
I’ve been a writer and editor since I was in high school; I got my start writing up Little League recaps at my local newspaper. I went to college to be a journalist, then worked at a bunch of newspapers along the way. On the side, dating back to the early 2000s, I played a lot of poker, and wrote even more about poker.
Then, about eight years ago, I started writing about daily fantasy sports in the early days of Legal Sports Report, and my world started changing. I wasn’t there from day one, nor was a website dedicated to covering the nascent sector of US sports betting my idea. But I did bring my journalistic background to bear on the industry and a site that was primed for the end of the federal ban of US sports betting in 2018. It was particularly wild to be asked to write an opinion piece in the Washington Post, my first real media gig out of college.
In those eight years, I helped grow a network of sites that covered the online gambling industry in a way that has been replicated by many others. First, I did this at a small start-up, and then with Catena Media, a news and affiliate company that is a leader in the online gambling space, which acquired the startup.
In that role, I was charged with growing sites, managing people and making decisions for a large, publicly traded company. I decided I needed a break, so I stepped away as a vice president, although I remain a consultant for the company.
One of the things I missed? Writing. So here you’ll get what I think about whatever is going on in the world of US gambling, and maybe some other stuff. I have opinions and Twitter only lets me give those in shorts bursts.
You can listen to my thoughts on the Legal Sports Report podcast, still, and you should get your news from there, always. But here you’ll get a dose of analysis and opinion that I was once known for, and that may only entertain me. But I hope I’ll entertain and educate you a bit, too.
